A South African soldier was killed and 13 others were wounded in a fight with M23 rebels in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Thursday.
The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) confirmed the casualties in a statement released on Friday. The soldiers were deployed in the DRC as part of a regional force from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) tasked with tackling armed groups in the region.
The clash occurred in the eastern town of Sake. Details remain limited, but the SANDF statement said “a battle ensued” with the M23 rebels, resulting in casualties and the destruction of two armored personnel carriers.
