The U.S. Embassy in Eswatini celebrated Menstrual Hygiene Day yesterday by handing over three new, female-friendly toilets at Mabasa Primary School. This initiative, funded by the Ambassador’s Special Self Help Program, aims to improve hygiene, school attendance, and self-esteem for female students and teachers.
The project partnered with Days for Girls, an organization dedicated to menstrual hygiene education and access to menstrual care products. The new toilets provide a safe and sanitary environment for girls during their periods, potentially reducing absenteeism and fostering a more comfortable learning experience.

“Menstrual health is often a taboo topic, leading girls to use unsafe alternatives for sanitary pads,” said Embassy Representative Annie Newton at the handover ceremony. “This collaboration with Days for Girls and the Mabasa Primary School community combats this stigma. By providing proper facilities and education, we empower girls to focus on their studies without missing school.”
