Abuja, Nigeria – Nigeria’s diplomatic missions abroad remain in limbo as the federal government grapples with financial constraints, according to Foreign Minister Amb. Yusuf Tuggar.

Addressing a ministerial briefing on Tuesday, Tuggar explained the delay in appointing new ambassadors. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had recalled all existing ambassadors in September 2023, leaving over 100 diplomatic missions unmanned. These missions include 76 embassies, 22 high commissions, and 11 consulates scattered across the globe.

The lack of ambassadors has sparked concerns about the effectiveness of Nigeria’s foreign policy and its ability to represent its interests internationally. However, Minister Tuggar highlighted the significant financial challenges faced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He stressed the futility of appointing ambassadors without adequate funding to support their travel and the smooth operation of diplomatic missions.

“We inherited a situation where the Ministry was significantly underfunded,” Tuggar remarked. “It’s a matter of resources. There’s no point in sending ambassadors abroad if they lack the funds to travel and effectively manage their missions.”

Despite these hurdles, the Minister expressed confidence that the government is actively addressing the issue. “President Tinubu is working on a solution, and appointments will be made in due course,” he assured.
