Kigali, Rwanda – Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has urged African nations to overhaul their visa policies, calling them a significant hurdle for investors and business leaders.
Dangote, chairman of the Dangote Group, highlighted the issue during a panel discussion at the Africa CEO Forum Annual Summit in Kigali. He revealed his own frustrations, stating that he needs a staggering 35 visas to travel across the continent.
“As an investor, someone who truly believes in Africa’s potential, it’s simply impractical to apply for so many visas,” Dangote remarked. “The current system discourages investment and hinders intra-African trade.”
However, Dangote offered a glimmer of hope. He disclosed that Nigerian President Bola Tinubu shares his concerns and has pledged to address the issue.
“There was a recent cabinet meeting where President Tinubu expressed his dissatisfaction with the visa situation,” Dangote reported. “I can assure you, significant reforms regarding visas entering Nigeria are coming within the next few weeks.”
Beyond the immediate reform in Nigeria, Dangote’s comments resonated with a broader concern for Africa’s economic growth. Restrictive and inconsistent visa policies have long been criticized for hindering continental integration and investment.
Dangote remains bullish on Africa’s future, comparing the continent’s potential to a scratchcard. “Africa is brimming with possibilities,” he declared. “Just like a scratchcard, you won’t know what incredible opportunities lie beneath the surface unless you take a chance and unlock them.”

Indeed, Afrika and Afrikans in particular deserve a visa free movement in the entire continent….
