Liberia has begun the voluntary repatriation of Liberian refugees following the demolition of parts of the Buduburam Refugee Camp in Ghana. A high-level delegation led by Deputy Foreign Minister Cllr. Jeddi Armah, alongside the Liberia Refugee Repatriation and Resettlement Commission (LRRRC), arrived in Ghana to facilitate the process.
This mission prioritizes the safe return of the first 700 Liberians affected by the demolitions. The Gomoa District Traditional Council initiated the demolition on February 27, 2024, citing illegal occupation of the land since the Liberian civil war began in 1990.
President Joseph Nyumah Boakai established an interagency working group led by the LRRRC to plan and facilitate the repatriation of willing Liberians. The group includes representatives from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, National Police, Internal Affairs, Information, and Gender, Children and Social Protection.
The Liberian delegation will collaborate with Ghanaian authorities to arrange safe passage back home. This includes securing travel routes from Ghana to Liberia via Cote d’Ivoire, ensuring the safe return of individuals and their belongings.
