Rwanda has strongly rejected accusations by Burundi that it was behind recent grenade explosions in the Burundian capital, Bujumbura.
A statement released by the Rwandan Office of the Government Spokesperson on Sunday called the allegations “despicable” and stressed that Rwanda has “absolutely no connection” to the attacks.
“There is something clearly wrong going on with Burundi for its government to make such claims,” the statement said. It further emphasized that Rwanda has “no problem” with Burundi, urging the neighboring country to “solve its own internal problems” instead of pointing fingers.
The accusations from Burundi stem from a series of grenade attacks that occurred in Bujumbura on Friday, injuring dozens. Burundi’s government subsequently blamed the RED-Tabara rebel group, which it claims is backed by Rwanda.
Rwanda and Burundi have a long history of strained relations, with accusations of supporting each other’s rebel groups being a recurring issue.
