Mozambique’s President Filipe Nyusi addressed the nation on Friday, May 10th, to announce a major Islamist attack on the northern town of Macomia. The town, located in the gas-rich Cabo Delgado province, has been a target for insurgents linked to the Islamic State since 2017.
President Nyusi confirmed ongoing clashes between the Mozambican army and the attackers. “Macomia is under attack since this morning,” he declared. “Fire exchange still continues.”
Reports suggest hundreds of insurgents may be involved. The attack began Friday morning, with militants initially retreating after a 45-minute battle. However, they regrouped and launched a renewed assault.
