The Nigerian Identity Management Commission (NIMC) announced a new system for issuing national ID cards. Partnering with the Nigerian Interbank Settlement System (NIBSS), applicants will now receive their cards through their banks.
This shift aims to streamline the process, mirroring how debit and credit cards are distributed. NIMC clarified that applicants can still request their cards through the NIMC online portal or offices alongside the new banking option.
The new ID card itself boasts enhanced functionality. It will function as a debit card powered by the indigenous AFRIGO card scheme, enabling financial transactions. NIMC also highlighted potential future uses for social services and even regional travel within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
While a designated pickup location will be available, applicants can choose home delivery for an additional fee. Further details regarding the rollout and card functionalities are expected from NIMC in the coming weeks.
