Starting from July 7, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) will initiate the sealing of residences lacking waste bins on Lagos Island and Mainland. This move comes as a result of abatement notices previously issued to these areas two months ago. In an official statement released on Wednesday in Lagos, Mr. Kunle Adebiyi, the Executive Director of Finance at LAWMA, emphasized the importance of procuring adequate waste bins for homes.

Encouraging responsible environmental practices and reducing pollution in the city are the primary objectives behind this enforcement action. LAWMA’s Enforcement Team will conduct comprehensive inspections to identify individuals, households, or businesses that consistently neglect waste management guidelines. Those found in violation will receive a notice of intention to seal, outlining the necessary actions to rectify the situation and avoid further penalties.

Phase one of this operation will focus on Lagos Mainland and Island, with subsequent phases covering other areas of the state to ensure full compliance. Residents are urged to take responsibility for maintaining a clean and healthy environment by adhering to waste management regulations. By procuring standard covered bins as directed by the government, waste can be properly contained, preventing issues such as indiscriminate waste disposal, flooding, and disease outbreaks.

LAWMA has been actively working towards enhancing waste management through initiatives such as waste sorting campaigns, recycling programs, and public awareness campaigns. These efforts aim to instill a culture of responsible waste disposal and minimize the adverse impact of waste on the environment. Mr. Adebiyi called on residents to join hands with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration in establishing a cleaner and healthier environment.

Residents are advised to refrain from indiscriminate waste disposal and utilize the waste management services offered by the Private Sector Participants’ operators. By collectively striving for a cleaner and more sustainable environment, Lagos can become the city of our dreams.
