Gunmen launched a fresh attack on the 3-3 Police Divisional Headquarters in Nkwelle-Ezunaka, located in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State, resulting in the death of six individuals.
However, police operatives foiled the attack in the early hours of Sunday. The Police Public Relations Officer in Anambra State, Ikenga Tochukwu, disclosed in a statement that the attackers, who arrived in two SUV vehicles and one Toyota Sienna, were armed with guns, Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and petrol bombs.
The attackers began shooting indiscriminately to gain access to the station, but they were fiercely engaged and resisted by the Divisional Police Officer and his men in a long gun battle.
The prompt reinforcement team, comprising Military and PMF operatives, arrived at the scene and engaged the insurgents in a gun duel. During the exchange, six of the attackers were neutralized, but one police operative attached to the station was fatally wounded. Additionally, an office in the facility was partially affected by a petrol bomb that the insurgents threw inside the station. One patrol vehicle parked in front of the station was set ablaze by the gunmen.
According to Tochukwu, some of the insurgents escaped with gunshot injuries, but joint operations are ongoing to track them down. The exhibits recovered from the insurgents included two AK-47 rifles, one Toyota Sienna vehicle with Reg No. Abuja ABC 848 EQ, charms, and other incriminating items. The situation is under control, and the incident is still being assessed.
