DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – Nigerians in the UAE face an uncertain future due to a diplomatic spat between the two countries, according to reports by Daily Trust Newspaper. The disagreement, centered on flight allocations and alleged trapped airline funds, has resulted in a work permit ban and visa hurdles for Nigerians.
Many Nigerians in Dubai are struggling to renew visas, losing jobs, and facing discrimination. The situation began in 2021 with tit-for-tat actions between the countries, including flight suspensions and travel bans. A new visa ban imposed by the UAE in October 2022 specifically targeted Nigerians, alongside other African nations.
Daily Trust reports paint a concerning picture for Nigerians in the UAE. Renewing visas has become difficult, with some like Babalola Soderu describing friends losing job opportunities due to visa delays. Shedrack Iditola blames the visa woes on trapped airline funds, while Enifome Elijah estimates over 200 Nigerians have returned home jobless.
A leader of Nigerians in the UAE, Citizen Oluwatosin, urged the Nigerian government to prioritize the well-being of its citizens and called for decisive action. He emphasized the positive contributions Nigerians make to the UAE’s economy.
The Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs remains hopeful. Spokesperson Alkasim Abdulkadir assured that discussions with the UAE are ongoing and a joint statement will be forthcoming. The UAE Embassy has not responded to inquiries.
Analysts offer varied perspectives. Professor Gbade Ojo suggests Nigerians focus on domestic opportunities, while Professor Sylvester Odion acknowledges the UAE’s right to protect its interests. Abdulrazaq Hamzat, another analyst, emphasizes the need for Nigeria to take a stronger stance on the international stage.
The situation remains unresolved, leaving many Nigerians in the UAE in a precarious position.
