Banjul, Gambia – The Gambia and Russia are seeking to deepen their relationship, with foreign ministers from both nations discussing ways to boost cooperation in trade, security, and global issues.
Gambian Foreign Minister Dr. Mamadou Tangara met with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, in Moscow on January 30th. Their talks focused on strengthening their “historically friendly” ties, particularly in areas like infrastructure, transportation, and agriculture.
Both sides emphasized their preference for diplomacy in resolving African conflicts, highlighting shared concerns in the Middle East and discussing UN Security Council reform. Additionally, they addressed regional concerns, including counterterrorism efforts in the Saharo-Sahel region and West Africa.
Minister Tangara also briefed his counterpart on the upcoming Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) summit in Banjul, seeking closer cooperation in multilateral platforms.
