Berlin, Germany – German Development Minister Svenja Schulze will travel to Nigeria next week for crucial talks with regional leaders amidst rising tensions following the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
This diplomatic visit comes just a week after the military juntas ruling these three nations severed ties with the regional bloc, accusing it of foreign influence and imposing “inhumane” sanctions after their respective coups. ECOWAS, in turn, suspended their memberships.
Schulze’s primary aim is to understand the complexities of the situation and foster dialogue. “Despite the recent disappointments, I believe we must preserve existing connections,” she emphasized. “Open communication is crucial for de-escalating tensions and finding a path forward.”
The minister’s meeting with ECOWAS Commission President Omar Touray will be a key step in understanding the regional perspective. Additionally, Schulze aims to assess the potential economic ramifications of the fractured relationships.
“Free trade and visa-free travel have significantly improved lives and businesses across West Africa,” she noted. “While I respect the sovereign decisions of these nations, the economic consequences cannot be ignored.”
Beyond immediate concerns, Schulze is looking towards the future. “Economic integration remains vital for development,” she declared. “The international community remains committed to supporting West Africa on its path towards shared prosperity.”
