Namibia woke to a somber Sunday on February 4, 2024, following the passing of President Hage Geingob. Surrounded by his family at Lady Pohamba Hospital, the leader succumbed to an ongoing battle with cancer at the age of 82.
News of Geingob’s passing triggered an outpouring of grief and national mourning. Tributes streamed in from across the globe, with Kenyan President William Ruto hailing him as “a distinguished leader who served his nation with focus and dedication.” Ruto further lauded Geingob’s unwavering commitment to African unity and his efforts to amplify the continent’s voice on the international stage.
“He was a believer in a unified Africa and strongly promoted the continent’s voice and visibility in the global arena,” Ruto stated. “May God give the people of Namibia strength and courage during this difficult period. Rest in Peace.”
Namibia’s Vice President, Nangolo Mbumba, confirmed the news in a televised address, calling it “a moment of deepest sorrow.” He praised Geingob’s medical team for their tireless efforts and appealed for national calm during the transition period.
“While keeping the President’s bereaved family and you, dear fellow Namibians, in our thoughts and prayers, the Cabinet will convene with immediate effect in order to make the necessary state arrangements in this regard,” Mbumba declared.
Geingob’s passing comes just days after his return from the United States, where he had undergone a novel treatment for cancerous cells. His death marks the end of an era for Namibia, a nation he has led since 2015.
