Berlin, January 30, 2024 – In a phone call on Monday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sissi urged immediate action to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and prevent further escalation in the region.
Both leaders agreed on the critical need to significantly improve access to humanitarian aid and essential supplies for Palestinians in the besieged enclave. The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas has exacerbated the dire situation in Gaza, leaving civilians vulnerable and in desperate need of assistance.
Scholz and al-Sissi also expressed deep concern for the safety of civilians caught in the crossfire. They emphasized the importance of measures to protect innocent lives on both sides of the conflict.
The German Chancellor reiterated his government’s unwavering support for a two-state solution as the only viable path to long-term peace and security for Israelis and Palestinians. He commended Egypt’s ongoing mediation efforts and stressed the need for continued regional cooperation to prevent the conflict from spiraling into a wider regional crisis.
Both leaders acknowledged the complex and sensitive nature of the situation, but they agreed that urgent action is necessary to alleviate the suffering of Gazans and pave the way for a more peaceful future.
