Abuja, Nigeria – Two people are feared dead after a fire gutted part of the Canadian Embassy in Abuja, Nigeria, on Monday.
According to eyewitnesses, the fire broke out while the embassy’s power-generating plant was being repaired. The fire quickly engulfed the plant, killing three of the technicians working on it. One technician managed to escape through the roof of the plant.
Other witnesses said that the force of the fire explosion blew several people out of the powerhouse.
Staff who ran out of the embassy for refuge told The Guardian that the fire broke out around 11:30 AM. Firefighting trucks arrived quickly and put out the flames, but not before the damage was done.
Rescue workers are still searching through the rubble of the power plant to determine if there are any other victims.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
