Juba, South Sudan – The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Commissioner, Filippo Grandi, visited South Sudan on Saturday to assess the current humanitarian situation and the impact of the conflict in Sudan.
Grandi met with the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hon. Deng Dau Deng, to discuss the government’s response to the refugee crisis. Grandi also visited Renk to see the situation of the refugees from Sudan.
Grandi expressed gratitude to the donors who have provided assistance to South Sudan and called for further funding. He said that more needed to be done to help the refugees who are fleeing the conflict in Sudan.
Hon. Deng thanked Grandi for his visit and highlighted that South Sudan has welcomed 774 thousand refugees from across the region. He said that the government is committed to providing assistance to the refugees.
Grandi encouraged the government to continue investing in plans and resources to address the refugee crisis. He said that the government should also work to find a political solution to the conflict in Sudan.
Grandi is scheduled to meet with President Salva Kiir on Monday to discuss how best to help South Sudan face the refugee crisis.
