25th June 2023 – Maputo, Mozambique: The Republic of Mozambique celebrates its 48th National Independence Day today, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s history. On this auspicious occasion, Isac Mamudo Massamby, Ambassador of Mozambique to Qatar, conveyed warm greetings from President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi to His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, the Amir of the State of Qatar, as well as to the friendly Qatari people and government.
Mozambique, located on the Eastern coast of Southern Africa, is a country with a population of approximately 33 million inhabitants. Its rich history is deeply influenced by Arabic, Portuguese, Chinese, and Indian cultures, blending harmoniously with the local heritage and making Mozambique a truly unique nation.
The country’s tropical to sub-tropical climate, with a rainy season from November to March, and its breathtaking beaches and warm climate, have made Mozambique a popular tourist destination. Additionally, its extensive Indian Ocean coastline, spanning approximately 2,800 kilometers, serves as a strategic location for international trade, fishing, and diverse tourism activities. Mozambique’s national ports connect the hinterland countries to the world, further enhancing its importance as a regional gateway.
Over the past decade, Mozambique has witnessed substantial developments in its logistics infrastructure, particularly in its ports. The Nacala deep port in Nampula Province underwent a crucial refurbishment, the Beira Port improved its infrastructure, and the Maputo Port reported consistent volume growth, solidifying its position as a gateway to the region.
To address the socio-economic challenges exacerbated by the impact of COVID-19 and cyclical natural disasters, the Mozambican government introduced a series of economic stimulus measures known as PAE in August 2022. These measures aim to revive economic growth, improve the business landscape, transparency, governance, accelerate infrastructure projects, and boost tourism, including the establishment of online e-visas.

Despite the recent challenges, Mozambique has remained resilient, and its people have much to celebrate. The nation’s commitment to supporting climate change resilience actions is embedded in its country partnership framework. Mozambique experienced an average economic growth rate of 7% before the COVID-19 pandemic. Although growth slowed to 2.16% in 2021, it rebounded to 4.14% in 2022, demonstrating the country’s determination to overcome adversities and foster prosperity.
Bilateral relations between Mozambique and Qatar have flourished, and next year, the two nations will commemorate the 30th anniversary of their diplomatic ties. Political and diplomatic cooperation has been the foundation of this relationship, with Qatar emerging as a significant partner on issues of global interest, such as the United Nations and the Islamic Conference Organization. Additionally, commercial trade between the two countries has experienced substantial growth.
In November 2021, Mozambique appointed its first resident Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Qatar, solidifying the bonds of friendship and cooperation between the two nations. President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi paid a historic visit to Qatar in February 2022, attending the VI GECF Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum in Doha. This visit marked Mozambique’s accession as an Observer to the GECF and provided an opportunity for fruitful discussions on reinforcing bilateral cooperation.
Currently, Mozambique and Qatar are preparing a series of agreements to foster partnerships and enhance bilateral cooperation for development, focusing on areas such as agriculture, infrastructure development, energy, health, and human resources. Both nations are determined to capitalize on their excellent relations and combine their strengths to achieve reciprocal and mutual benefits.
