Somali leaders meet UN representative to promote partnership and development

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre engaged in separate meetings with Catriona Laing, the newly appointed UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Somalia, at The Villa Somalia today. The discussions centered around the federal government’s key goals and the ongoing partnership between Somalia and the United Nations.

During their meeting, President Mohamud and UN Special Representative Catriona Laing had in-depth discussions, highlighting Somalia’s priorities for sustainable socio-economic, security, and political development. They explored avenues to bolster the progress made by the government through the outlined priorities, with a particular focus on UN assistance for Somalia’s transition.

Prime Minister Barre also met with UN Special Representative Catriona Laing to discuss the critical topic of UN support in Somalia’s development journey. The meeting emphasized the importance of sustainable socio-economic growth, enhanced security measures, and political stability. Both leaders deliberated on ways to align the ongoing progress with the government’s outlined priorities.

Expressing gratitude, Prime Minister Barre commended the support provided by the UN family to the Somali people and institutions. He specifically acknowledged their collaborative efforts, which played a vital role in saving millions of lives and preventing a famine in 2022. The Prime Minister stressed the need for continued cooperation and coordination, underscoring the importance of aligning UN support with the government’s current agenda.

Dr. Yahie Haji-Ali, the Director of National Protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation of the Federal Republic of Somalia, took to Twitter to extend a warm welcome to Catriona Laing. He highlighted her extensive experience of over 35 years in international relations, development, and diplomacy, emphasizing the valuable expertise she brings to the post. Dr. Haji-Ali expressed his honor in welcoming her to the peaceful nation of Somalia.
