South African minister visits Portugal to strengthen bilateral ties

Lisbon, Portugal – May 18, 2023 – Dr. Naledi Pandor, the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, arrived in Lisbon today, where she was warmly received by Ambassador Mmamokwena Gaoretelelwe. This visit marks an important step in further enhancing the diplomatic relations between South Africa and Portugal.

Dr. Pandor’s official visit to Portugal, scheduled from May 18-19, 2023, comes in response to an invitation extended by Mr. João Gomes Cravinho, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Portugal. The visit aims to strengthen the already strong bilateral ties between the two countries and explore opportunities for increased cooperation.

The relationship between Portugal and South Africa encompasses various sectors, including education, science and technology, defense, trade, and investment. The collaboration in these areas has laid a solid foundation for continued growth and mutual benefit. Both nations recognize the importance of nurturing these ties and finding new avenues for partnership.

Trade between South Africa and Portugal has flourished over the years, with well-established economic relations. In 2021 alone, South African exports to Portugal were valued at approximately R2.8 billion, while imports from Portugal amounted to around R4.6 billion. This signifies the significant exchange of goods and services between the two countries, contributing to economic growth and prosperity.

During her visit, Minister Pandor will engage in high-level discussions with her Portuguese counterpart and other officials, with the aim of deepening cooperation in various fields of mutual interest. These discussions will focus on areas such as education, science and technology, trade, and investment, aiming to identify new opportunities and foster collaboration for the benefit of both nations.

Minister Pandor expressed her optimism regarding the visit, stating, “I am delighted to be in Portugal, a valued partner of South Africa. This visit presents an excellent opportunity to further strengthen our bilateral relations and explore avenues for increased cooperation. We look forward to productive discussions and forging new partnerships that will contribute to the growth and development of both our nations.”

As South Africa and Portugal continue to foster their longstanding friendship, this visit by Minister Pandor serves as a testament to the commitment of both nations in deepening their bilateral ties. Through collaboration and shared objectives, the aim is to create a mutually beneficial relationship that will contribute to the prosperity of both South Africa and Portugal.
