Africa’s Travel Indaba 2023, the continent’s premier tourism trade show, kicked off on May 8 at the International Convention Centre in Durban. The event is focused on showcasing the unlimited possibilities of the African continent.
Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille opened the event by highlighting the importance of tourism recovery. Deputy Minister Fish Commissar Mahlalela emphasized the significance of the Africa’s Travel Indaba as a platform for broadcasting the best of African tourism products.
South African Tourism ACEO, Sonto Ndlovu, took to the stage to share insights on how the travel sector can create unique and authentic experiences for tourists. According to Vusi Thembekwayo, South Africa has a rich tradition of storytelling but hasn’t always taken advantage of the opportunity to share its story with the world.

Tourism deputy minister Amos Mahlalela expressed optimism that the industry would rebound to pre-pandemic levels as part of the economic recovery plan. However, he also acknowledged that there were bottlenecks to address, including infrastructure, safety, and policy. Olayinka Bandele, Senior Economist at the WHO Liaison Office to the African Union and UN Economic Commission for Africa, spoke about the importance of building a tourism sector that works for all Africans.
The event is a must-attend for anyone involved in the tourism sector. It provides tourism practitioners with insights into crafting their own unique stories and showcases the diversity and richness of the African continent.
