Bratislava, Slovakia – President Zuzana Čaputová commemorated the 78th anniversary of Victory over Fascism at Slavín on Sunday. The ceremony was held to remember the end of World War II and the defeat of fascism in Europe.
During her address, the president emphasized the importance of respecting human rights and protecting freedom and democracy. She stated that history has shown wars are unleashed by regimes that do not respect these fundamental values.
“Today, we remember the millions of people who lost their lives in the fight against fascism, and we pay tribute to the brave men and women who fought against this evil ideology,” said President Čaputová. “We must never forget the lessons of history and the atrocities committed during this dark period. We must continue to promote and defend the values of freedom, democracy, and human rights.”

The ceremony was attended by various political leaders, veterans, and citizens, who laid wreaths and flowers at the monument of Slavín to honor the fallen heroes. The President also took a moment to express gratitude to the Slovakian people, who fought valiantly during World War II.
“Today, we stand here in the presence of those who sacrificed their lives to defend our country and our freedom. We owe them a debt of gratitude, and we must ensure that their legacy lives on,” said President Čaputová.
The President’s message serves as a reminder that peace cannot exist without freedom and democracy. As Slovakia looks to the future, it is important to remember the lessons of the past and continue to uphold the values that have made our society strong and prosperous.
