Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest and most profitable airline, celebrated its 77th anniversary on April 8, 2023, highlighting its proud history and commitment to connecting Ethiopia and the continent to the world.

On April 8, 1946, Ethiopian Airlines made its inaugural international flight to Cairo, marking the beginning of a remarkable journey that has seen the airline rise to become Africa’s largest, most profitable, and award-winning aviation group.

Over the years, Ethiopian Airlines has overcome the many challenges facing the aviation industry and the unique hurdles of operating in Africa, achieving a number of notable firsts along the way. These include introducing the first jet aircraft in Africa, launching the first scheduled flight between East and West Africa, becoming the first airline from the Western Hemisphere to fly to China, and inaugurating the first scheduled service between the capitals of the world’s most populous nations, from New Delhi to Beijing.

Ethiopian Airlines has also been at the forefront of innovation in Africa’s aviation industry, being the first airline on the continent to introduce the B767, B777-200LR, B787 (Dreamliner), and later the A350.

Despite facing numerous challenges, including the recent impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the aviation industry, Ethiopian Airlines has remained steadfast in its commitment to excellence, safety, and customer service. The airline has continued to expand its route network and fleet, investing in new technology and sustainable practices, and creating new opportunities for travelers and businesses across Africa and beyond.

As Ethiopian Airlines celebrates its 77th anniversary, the airline can look back with pride on its many achievements, and forward with confidence to the opportunities and challenges of the future.
